So, you want to learn photography.
Great! And great news. Besides the amazing blog you’re currently reading (cough cough), there are tons fantastic and FREE photography resources online. You don’t have to break the bank to learn a skill that already breaks the bank once (cameras are too expensive, but that’s a discussion for another time). Over the years I have compiled a short list of some of the best online photography resources available to you, many of which are free. So, without further ado, lets expand that already big brain of yours.
YouTube
There are countless channels on Youtube that are dedicated to teaching the basics of photography. A few channels you might consider checking out are:
My favorite: Although their main hosts have changed and launched their own channels, Digital Rev TV still has a ton of awesome content. The hosts are hilarious, and the content is gold. B&H has some great technical courses that are free, including a 1.5 hour Lightroom tutorial.
Blogs
Lucky for you, there are many blogs other than this one, and these are mostly free. I say mostly, because often times they will prompt you to buy an ebook or opt into an online course. If you enjoy the content of these individuals, then perhaps you would not mind investing a bit of cash. Here are a few blogs that are definitely worth checking out:
My favorite: I recommend PetaPixel because of their wonderful tutorials for new photographers.
Online Courses
Although not always free, and also not always necessary (because YouTube), online courses are still a fantastic way to learn photography. Websites like Udemy and Skillshare (my personal favorite) offer some amazing courses for cheap prices. Skillshare offers shorter and creative based courses, but has many of them. They are all pretty good, too! Udemy has longer and perhaps more detailed courses, but each course must be paid for individually. Personally, I recommend checking out these Skillshare courses 🙂
- Fundamentals of DSLR Photography (This course is just over an hour long, and covers almost everything you need to know about your DSLR. Much check it out!
- Photography Masterclass (Over 7.5 hours, but incredibly comprehensive. Definitely a good one).
My Favorite: I really like the Skillshare courses. There are a ton of them, and cover many different topics in photography. Really love this resource. Plus, the subscription is super cheap.
